Fill & Base
24-42″ Riprap (XXL Stone Fill)
Also known as: XXL Riprap, Heavy Riprap, R8 Riprap, Armor Stone
24-42" Riprap is among the largest stone fill we carry, with individual pieces running roughly two to three-and-a-half feet across. It's built for high-energy work: armoring shorelines and steep banks, restoring areas where erosion has already started, and filling large voids and ditches. When fast water and wave action would carry smaller stone away, this is the size that stays put.
Applications
- Shoreline & Bank Armoring
- Erosion Control
- Bridge Abutment & Slope Protection
- Filling Large Voids & Ditches
- Stream & Channel Stabilization
Why It Works
Heavy enough that the water doesn't move it
The whole point of riprap is mass. Each piece in this size is heavy enough to resist being displaced by current, wave action, and storm flow that would push smaller stone downstream. The larger the stone, the higher the velocity it can stand up to, which is why 24-42″ is the call for exposed shorelines, fast-moving water, and banks that are already failing.
The irregular, angular shape matters too. The pieces wedge against each other and form a stable armored layer rather than a loose pile, so the mass holds together and protects the soil underneath. Placed correctly over a proper bedding layer, riprap this size is a long-term fix, not a seasonal patch.
