Bio-Retention Soil

Also known as: Bioretention Soil Media, BSM, Rain Garden Soil, Bioswale Mix

Bio-Retention Soil is an engineered blend of sand and a smaller fraction of organic compost, mixed to drain fast and still grow plants. It's the material called out on stormwater plans for rain gardens, bioswales, and bioretention cells, where runoff has to filter down through the soil instead of pooling on top. If the plan set spec says bioretention media and not topsoil, this is what you order.

Why It Works

Built to drain fast and still grow plants.

Bio-Retention Soil has to do two things at once, and that’s the whole point of blending it. The high sand fraction keeps it open so stormwater moves down through the profile at the infiltration rate the design depends on. The smaller compost fraction holds enough moisture and nutrients to establish and sustain the plants that do the filtering. Get either side wrong and the system stops working the way the engineer drew it.

It’s screened and blended to a spec, free of the stones, roots, and woody debris that would clog the bed or interfere with grading. Around the Hudson Valley, that spec usually traces back to the New York State stormwater design manual, so the material that goes in has to match what the SWPPP calls for, not just look like good dirt.
