Screened Topsoil

Screened Topsoil is natural topsoil run through a mesh screen to pull out the rocks, roots, sticks, and clumps, leaving a uniform, workable soil. It's the material for new lawns, garden beds, and finish grading where you need something that rakes out smooth and actually grows grass and plants. If you're putting down seed or sod or building a planting bed, this is the layer that goes on top.

Why It Works
Screened clean, so it grades smooth and grows.
Screening is what separates this from raw dirt. Running topsoil through a mesh pulls out the rocks, roots, and clumps that turn a finish grade into a fight. What’s left is uniform and consistent, so it rakes out level and you’re not picking debris off the surface before you seed.
The topsoil itself holds the organic material and nutrients that grass and plants need to root and establish. That’s the trade-off between this and plain fill: fill gives you volume and structure, screened topsoil gives you a surface that things actually grow in. For most Hudson Valley lawn and bed work, you want a few inches of it over your graded base, not the other way around.
