Elk Brook® Bluestone Treads

Also known as: Bluestone Steps, Bluestone Stair Treads, Thermal Bluestone Treads, Bluestone Wall Caps

Elk Brook Bluestone Treads are dimensional bluestone slabs cut for stairs, wall caps, and coping. They come with a finished top and at least one finished long edge, so the front nosing of the step or the face of a wall cap reads clean once it's set. For outdoor steps and walls in the Hudson Valley, this is the finished stone that goes on top of the structure you've built.

Why It Works

Cut to size with a finished edge where it shows.

Bluestone is a dense, durable sandstone that holds up to weather and foot traffic, which is why it has been the go-to step and cap stone in this region for generations. Treads are cut to consistent thickness, usually around 2 inches, so they sit flat and line up evenly when you set a run of stairs or cap a wall.

The finished edge is the point. A tread carries a smooth top and at least one finished long edge, so the part you see and step on looks deliberate while the back edge can tuck into the riser or wall behind it. Set on a compacted base or mortared to the structure, the slab does the visible work and the structure underneath does the heavy lifting.
