Natural Grey Clay is a dense, cohesive material pulled from our quarry operations. Unlike stone or fill that lets water through, clay packs down tight and holds water back, which makes it the material people reach for when they need a natural, low-permeability barrier. It's the go-to for lining ponds and water features and for building watertight cores in berms and earthen embankments.

Why It Works

Clay holds water where stone lets it go.

The whole point of Natural Grey Clay is that it doesn’t drain. When it’s compacted in lifts, the fine particles pack together and squeeze out the air and void space that water would otherwise move through. That gives you a dense, watertight layer instead of a path for water to escape.

For a pond, that means the water you put in stays in without a synthetic liner. For a berm or an earthen embankment, a clay core gives you a barrier that resists seepage through the middle of the structure. It’s a natural material doing a job that usually calls for plastic or rubber, and when it’s installed and compacted right, it holds for a long time.
